SUMMARY: Lock-in rarely announces itself. It arrives as a set of small conveniences that become expensive to unwind.
The exit cost ledger is a practical inventory of what it would take to leave a system. It does not assume departure is necessary. It assumes only that the operator should know the price before the door narrows.
Every dependency has an exit cost: time, money, reputation, data loss, broken links, retraining, search visibility, identity verification, contractual delay, or social friction. The cost may be acceptable. The danger is not cost. The danger is discovering the cost only after leverage has moved to the system you need to leave.
What to Record
Data portability: Can you export the record in a usable format? Screenshots are evidence, not portability. A real export can be read, searched, restored, and transferred without the original platform acting as gatekeeper.
Identity anchors: Which email, phone number, domain, document, device, or payment method proves ownership? If one anchor controls many systems, the ledger should mark it as critical infrastructure.
Public surface: What breaks in public if you move? Links, citations, rankings, profiles, feeds, and archives can become invisible costs. The operator should know which surfaces are portable and which are rented.
Restoration time: How long would departure take under calm conditions? Double it for crisis conditions. If the answer is unknown, the system has not been audited.
How to Use the Ledger
Start with five dependencies: domain registrar, primary email, payment processor, file storage, and publishing platform. For each one, write the owner, backup path, export method, renewal date, support channel, and expected restoration time.
Then connect the ledger to the redundancy map. The redundancy map shows alternate paths. The exit cost ledger explains whether those paths are actually usable when pressure arrives.
Operator Rule
Do not try to leave every system. That becomes a lifestyle of unnecessary friction. Instead, know the cost of leaving every critical system. Awareness is optionality. Optionality is quiet power.
Field assessment: dependency is not failure. Unpriced dependency is.
