Moderation pressure rarely distributes evenly. One chat room fills with recurring status output. One forum attracts ambiguous prompts. One account produces volume without conversation. One page becomes the place where old rules no longer fit new behavior.
The heatmap turns that pressure into a surface operators can inspect. It helps separate isolated cleanup from a pattern that deserves policy, design, or automation changes.
Heat Sources
Volume heat: repeated messages or posts that crowd out human signal.
Ambiguity heat: discussions where the rule, room purpose, or next action is unclear.
Staleness heat: prompts, replies, or rooms that remain open but no longer generate useful participation.
Identity heat: new or silent accounts that require review before they are trusted as normal background.
Countermeasure
Use heatmaps with review debt. Debt shows what is overdue. Heatmaps show where overdue review is actively changing the community experience.
Operator Rule
If the same place keeps needing attention, stop treating each cleanup as separate.
