FIELD RECORD: The terminal showed one name and two journeys. The clerk called it a complete history.
This is original systems fiction set in Clandestinia, not a report about a real organization.
The Candidate
Mara was waiting for the outcome of the separate review opened in The Second Signature. At the next counter, a traveler was being asked to explain a missed appointment in a district he said he had never visited.
The two records shared a name. One listed an old transit address; the other had no address at all. On the search screen, a small label said possible match. On the access screen, the missed appointment appeared without that label.
Somewhere between the screens, a question had become a fact.
The Joined History
The clerk could see the combined timeline but not the reason the records had been joined. The traveler offered his current journey receipt. It established something about this trip, not everything about another person’s history.
Asking him for a larger pile of documents would not explain the original match. The clerk requested the linkage record instead. It showed a name comparison and a blank field treated as though it supported agreement.
There was no recorded human confirmation. The station’s later decisions had inherited more certainty than the matching step produced.
Keeping the Question Open
A supervisor paused the restriction that depended on the disputed link. Staff separated the candidate records for review without deleting either source history. The correction note identified which downstream decisions might need another look.
They did not announce that every record under the name belonged to a different person. They recorded the narrower conclusion: the evidence shown did not justify this join.
Mara watched the traveler receive a case reference rather than another request to prove the whole of his life. The histories were still being checked. At least the uncertainty now traveled with them.
Field assessment: finding a similar record is not the same as establishing who it describes. Continue with A Match Is Not an Identity and Test a Record Link.
