FIELD RECORD: The receipt said submission received. The case summary said no supporting evidence. Between them, an attachment had never reached a reader.
This is original systems fiction set in Clandestinia, not a report about a real organization.
The Missing Page
The traveler whose history had been disputed in The Shared Name returned with a copy of his submission receipt. Mara recognized the case reference. The review desk had asked for a journey document, and he had tried to provide it.
His device saved the document in a format the station portal did not accept. A small message had appeared beneath the upload field. The main form still submitted, producing a receipt without an attachment list.
The traveler believed the document had gone with it. The reviewer believed he had chosen not to supply one.
What the System Had Seen
The clerk checked the intake record. It showed a rejected upload attempt, not a judgment about the document’s contents. Nobody had opened the file. Nothing in that record established whether it supported the traveler’s account.
The summary had collapsed three different states into one: not attempted, not accepted and not available for review. The reviewer could not tell which had occurred.
A Receipt With Edges
The desk did not disable the upload restriction. Instead, it offered an approved intake route and explained which material had actually arrived. The new receipt listed the accepted document separately from the earlier rejected attempt.
The correction changed the case summary to say that supporting material had not been available to the reviewer at that time. It did not call the material valid before examining it, and it no longer implied that the traveler had remained silent.
Mara kept the two receipts beside one another. A system could refuse a file without refusing to remember what had happened.
