A page can show today's timestamp and still carry yesterday's assumptions. A news module can refresh links while preserving an old source mix. A forum can show new activity around an unchanged rule. A dashboard can update metrics while the question behind the metric has expired.
Freshness is useful. Plausible freshness is dangerous because it borrows the credibility of maintenance without doing the work of review.
Freshness Signals
Moving timestamp: dates change automatically while substance stays untouched.
Activity proxy: comments, chat, or ranking make a surface look alive without validating its premise.
Source inertia: feeds update, but source selection, geography, and framing remain unreviewed.
Maintenance theater: visible motion substitutes for a clear review decision.
Countermeasure
Separate updated from reviewed. A surface can say when data changed, when judgment changed, and when the next review is due. This extends the review clock into search, news, archives, and status modules.
Operator Rule
Do not let visible activity pretend to be current judgment.
Field assessment: motion is not the same as review.
