Operator Brief: Test Status Freshness

OBJECTIVE: Test whether a fictional status display accurately describes the age and limits of its information. Use paper snapshots or an authorized isolated test environment. Do not disable production connections, change live clocks or use real participant records.

1. Define the Age Rule

Create a synthetic appointment board with separate fields for source observation time, last successful receipt, last attempted update and page render time. For this exercise only, treat a source snapshot more than five test minutes old as delayed.

State that exactly five minutes remains within the test window. This boundary is an invented fixture, not a recommendation for an actual service. Give the delayed state a clear label and a fictional confirmation contact.

2. Keep the Page Alive

Load a snapshot at test time 10:00, then model failed update attempts at 10:03 and 10:06. Continue rendering the page with the current test clock.

At 10:06, the display should identify the snapshot as delayed under the stated rule. Neither a page reload nor a failed attempt should replace the last successful receipt or the original source observation time.

3. Deliver an Old Snapshot Again

At 10:07, simulate a successful transfer that still carries the 10:00 source snapshot. Check whether the display incorrectly treats the new receipt time as proof of fresh source information.

Then provide a new snapshot with no appointments and an explicit source time. Compare it with a failed response that contains no usable snapshot. The two situations should not produce an indistinguishable claim that there are no appointments.

4. Check the Recovery Claim

Deliver a valid snapshot whose source time falls within the test window. Ask a second reviewer to explain why the delayed label can now change, using the source time and receipt evidence rather than the moving page clock.

Completion criterion: fresh, delayed, unknown and genuinely empty information remain distinguishable. Failed refreshes do not disguise age, and users can find the defined confirmation route when the display cannot support a current claim.
